Today, we would like to highlight Dr. Mirka Zapletal, Education and Outreach Manager at the Newfound Lake Association. A guest speaker and activity leader at various Circle Program events throughout the year she embodies a passion for accessible environmental science, particularly for women and girls. Her approach is rooted in hands-on, experiential learning, exemplified by activities like leading a pond exploration with campers and bird watching at Grey Rocks with community members. These experiences not only educate but also foster a sense of comfort and capability within the natural world, breaking down traditional barriers. Dr. Zapletal's own journey is a testament to this philosophy. Originally a social studies teacher, she later pursued conservation, driven by a desire to contribute positively to the environment. This transition highlights her belief that anyone can pursue science, regardless of their background.
Her work at the Newfound Lake Association extends beyond traditional education, she leads after-school programs, adult hikes, and works with programs like Circle Program to ensure community-wide engagement with the Newfound Lake watershed. Dr. Zapletal emphasizes the importance of empowering young women, encouraging them to find joy in nature.
At Circle Camp a particularly exciting prospect is the potential for a summer project with Dr. Zapletal involving wildlife cameras, allowing the girls to actively participate in data collection and contribute to citizen science. Ultimately, Dr. Zapletal's work underscores the power of accessible, hands-on learning in fostering a deeper connection with the environment and empowering individuals, especially women, to become stewards of our planet.
Thank you Dr. Zapletal for your positive influence on the Girls of Circle Program!
